This brief involved creating a behaviour change solution and a distruptive solution for an issue involving plastic and the ocean. The outcome consisted of eight boards informing the audience of the issue and the solution
PROBLEM
Single-use beverage cups such as coffee cups are one of the top ten most littered items on beaches around the world and have a detrimental impact on the marine environment due to its hidden plastic lining. Additionally, misinformation surrounding the disposal of seemingly ‘eco-friendly’ cups contribute to the littering problem, also impacting marine life.
SOLUTION
Research has supported deposit return schemes as an effective way to reduce single-use waste, so my behaviour change solution was to create a mandatory and standardised deposit return scheme for coffe cups in Cardiff. The disruptive design involved a mobile coffee van which alerts the customer of the 'true cost' of their coffee once they have paid for it.
STAKEHOLDER MAPPING
1. The Welsh Government is key to engage with as they are making active steps to make the circular economy a reality in Wales.
2. Businesses in Cardiff are the ones who supply the public with single-use takeaway cups so they would be vital to engage with to change consumer behaviour.
3. Non-governmental Organisations are necessary to provide insight into the issue and to provide the resources needed for a circular economy.
4. Lastly, Consumers are the ones with the buying power so it is important to consider consumer needs alongside the needs of the environment.
COLLABORATIVE SOLUTION
The solution involves a collaborative scheme between Circular&Co, who produce reusable cups specifically for return schemes, and Re-universe who are a tech company specialising in deposit-return scheme. These organisations have already collaborated on successful schemes at Blenheim Palace, The Eden Project and Wimbledon, which makes them a credible resource for this solution.
Funding would be provided by the SMART Flexible Innovation Support (FIS) fund which aims to support Welsh businesses/organisations to innovate and create new products or services to help Wales towards a carbon-free future.
FINAL BEHAVIOR CHANGE BOARDS
DISRUPTIVE SOLUTION
To inform the audience of the damage of single-use takeaway cups and disrupt their usual behaviour, I conceptualised a mobile coffee van which sends the customer an alert about the 'true cost' of their coffee once they have paid for it.
